What’s New This Month:
April….wet, wet, wet.  A normal month!!  Who knew ;)

Hoping to shake off the hum-drum feelings I had last month… guessing the overcast weather might of had some affect on that but regardless I was a grump so enough of that!

Pumped up for May.  I met my wife about 10-11 years ago and we are celebrating our 7th wedding anniversary with a weekend away (no kids).  I really love her and wouldn’t be the person I am today without her.  She’s an amazing woman and I’m lucky to be part of her world.

Hope your spring is off to a great start.  I’m glad to be part of your monthly read…thanks for staying in touch!  Hope you make time to enjoy your friends and famliy and I’ll talk to you again next month!!

Toyota of Des Moines Hybrid Mileage Contest celebrates good MPG, fuel economy

With fuel prices set to increase throughout the summer to possible all-time highs, hybrid vehicles are on consumers’ minds more now than ever.

Toyota of Des Moines realizes that and wants to give visitors to this Sunday’s Earth Day in the Junction a chance to scope out – and even drive – various hybrid vehicles during the Toyota of Des Moines Hybrid Mileage Contest.

Participants will compete at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, April 22, for the best mile-per-gallon rating while covering a pre-determined 25-mile course, within the allotted 1-hour time limit. The driver with the best MPG for the 25 miles, achieved in one hour or less.

Each participant will receive a $10.00 gas card just for taking part in our Earth Day MPG Race. The winners will receive:

• Grand Prize: $200.00 Toyota of Des Moines Parts/Service Gift Certificate.
• Second place: $150.00 Toyota of Des Moines Parts/Service Gift Certificate.
• Third place: $75.00 Toyota of Des Moines Parts/Service Gift Certificate.

Celebrity hybrid owners will also participate to show their stuff and talk about their fuel-savings strategies along the 25-mile course. All competitors must have hybrids that have capability to measure actual mileage on their computer readout.

We will also have a category this year for Best Car Decoration and Best Driver/Passenger Costume.

Please RSVP to Carla at cfitch@toyotadm.com or 515-333-5384. And browse our hybrid inventory online:

Shane Siegle says Des Moines is moving away from “fly-over country”

Last month I offered my opinions and suggestions on digging a little deeper than the surface to find great music and entertainment. Since then, the promoters of the 80/35 Music Festival in Des Moines have begun announcing the 2012 line-up, and it makes me think that Des Moines is continuing to shake its reputation as “fly-over country” for many things.

Since 80/35 began, headlining acts have been enticed to Des Moines and rewarded with rabid crowds of music fanatics. But more than that, the city of Des Moines itself, the neighborhoods within and the suburbs nearby continue to be recognized for their activities and their passionate people.

In the past 12 months, Forbes Magazine has named Des Moines the No. 1 best city for young professionals and the No. 2 best place for business and careers. US News & World Report named Des Moines the No. 1 richest metro in the nation, and Self Magazine dubbed Des Moines the No. 2 healthiest city in the nation. (This information and more can be found on the Greater Des Moines Partnership Web site, http://www.desmoinesmetro.com/)

Add to that the 2012 Great American Main Street Award given to Valley Junction – which will host Earth Day in the Junction on April 22, where you can take part in the Hybrid Mileage Content, sponsored by Toyota of Des Moines – and there’s a lot to be proud of around here. (Read more at http://www.earthdayatthejunction.com)

And from my professional life, Toyota of Des Moines was recently awarded for being No. 1 in its region for the seventh year in a row. Combine all of this with the beautiful weather we’ve had in the past two months and it kinda makes you want to cruise around town in your Toyota, windows down and your favorite music in the background.

What’s New This Month:
Wow, March was busy…hope that is a sign that this economy thing is on the upswing.

Gonna try to get a little healthier with the nicer weather now.  Took my daughters out fishing last week and they both caught one their first cast!!  Of course they wanted to go fishing every day after that….two days later…they didn’t like fishing anymore because we didn’t catch one :)

Had my first pizza cooked on the grill…pretty good and cooks super fast!

Don’t wish to talk cars much in my monthly letter but I’ve found my next new car (Prius c)….absolutely love it!  I’m a fan of smaller cars and it’s very techy…oh and 53MPG is nice too ;)  Mark my words…it will be my next car when we can get rid of the minivan for daycare.  Sure my wife won’t object because she loathes the van.

Everyone is healthy and happy and that makes life grand.  Just blessed to be part of your monthly read…thanks for staying in touch.  Hope you’re enjoying the early warm weather, and I’ll talk to you again next month!!

Shane Siegle believes we can dig a little deeper to find great music

Shane Siegle, Sales Consultant

As a member of many local bands in the past decade, and as a music lover of all kinds, I appreciate the hard work that goes into creating music, and it pains me when good music goes unnoticed.

Some good music still finds its way to the radio, but 95 percent of what you hear on the airwaves is homogenized and put on repeat for easy digestion. A lot more good – and great – music just cannot break through the “glass ceiling,” so it’s on our hands to dig a little deeper to find it.

On the national level, you may need to pick up a magazine like Spin or Paste to read about up-and-coming artists; you may want to sample related artists on iTunes or browse Pandora or Spotify; and you may support a local music store and spend an hour sifting through the collections. The owner or clerk may offer an opinion or even open a CD for you to check out over the stereo.

Speaking of local, throngs of local musicians are trying to “make it” every weekend, and without support beyond their close families and high school classmates, they may not grab the audience they deserve. Check out publications like Juice or Datebook to see who is on the music calendar, and check out a local band that piques your interest. Look them up on Facebook to see if they have the BandCamp app or any other way to sample their sound. Or spend the $5 or $10 and give them a first chance in person.

It may take a little responsibility on our part, but we can seek out good music outside of the major-label, conglomerate-radio status quo.

Contact me with your thoughts on cars, music and more at ssiegle@toyotadm.com, or call (515) 276-4911.

What’s New This Month
March 1st was the 37th Anniversary of my existence…yes, that’s right…I’ve completed 37 revolutions around the sun and I’m not too dizzy yet ;)

Finally got to move some snow last month but it all melted the next day.  What a great winter!!

Had a few new MPG winners arrive to the dealership just in time for this big gas price scare and they are pretty neat (you should check them out).

Raea won a most creative category in a lego building contest…fun.  Emily is doing great with her reading…going through complete books now.  Very proud of both of them.

Rachel has joined a program a couple months ago and is looking great because of it. We are both much happier trying to be healthier.  Finally paying off my first Toyota this month (super excited my first paid-off car ever that still runs great!) That’s very new to my wife and I.

Got my first smart phone and WOW…had no idea what I was missing but don’t think I could do without it now :)

I’m really blessed to be where I’m at today and hope that ‘mid-life crisis’ never comes (haha).  Hope you having a great start to your March and I’ll talk to you again next month!!

What’s New This Month
Well, yet another month with very little snow….Loving it!! January was a nice start to the year for sure.  I have changed schedule, as you’ll notice below, for the better :)

My daughters are getting so big…Emily is 5yrs old now and 45 inches tall.  It’s hard to grasp that when I started working here she was yet to be born…sheesh! :)  She’s learning to read better everyday now and I’m very proud of her.

My oldest is getting into Harry Potter sumthin’ fierce as well as the Harry Potter Lego version on the Wii…she can tell you about and recite just about everything in the books, movies, games, etc…

My wife is doing well and we’re on the count down to get our vehicles paid off this year (super excited about that!).  Rachel and Raea got their ears pierced and it’s odd how that really changes the look of someone you see every day.

I’m blessed to be around such beautiful people.  Hope you having a great start to your year and talk to you again next month!!

Scion Champion Dan Corron talks music and passion

My name is Dan Corron and I’m the Scion Champion as well as a Sales and Leasing Consultant at Toyota & Scion of Des Moines. This month marks my seventh year here at the dealership. After going to a Scion dealer my wife looked at me and said, “You should be a car salesmen.” I thought she was joking or trying to poke fun at exuberance with researching vehicles and demanding great customer service. Well, I have to admit every day I come to work that my wife was right. We all have passions, and life is too short not to follow yours.

Another passion that I have, other than cars, is music. In my life, I’ve sung in many different choirs, studied under some amazing musicians, and thought long and hard about becoming a starving artist myself. So naturally one of my major buying decisions with a vehicle is the clarity and versatility of a cars stereo system.

Most people do a test drive and take the vehicle in the city, on the highway, and sometime to see if it fits in their garage. Have you ever taken the stereo “for a spin” and experienced the range and clarity of the speakers, tested the different inputs it offers, and explored the newest innovations that boggle the mind?

You’d be amazed with some of the things Toyota & Scion are doing to impress the audiophile in all of us. Next time you’re here…. go for it…. take a stereo for a spin.

You can contact me at dcorron@toyotadm.com, or call the dealership at (515) 276-4911.

Stephen Caspar’s observations on vehicle turn signals

 Vehicle Turn Signals – Definitions:

A stalk-like mechanism that is usually attached to the left side of a vehicle’s steering column.  It is standard equipment on all vehicles yet strangely seldom used.

Allegedly the turn signal allows a vehicle’s driver to alert other drivers in advance that said vehicle is likely to change course in the near future.  Unfortunately, many drivers ignore the advance warning potential of the turn signal and activate said device AFTER they have started to turn their vehicle.

Most turn signal stalks can be identified by their multiple layers of accumulated dust.  Geologists can readily identify the various environments to which a vehicle has been exposed  by scientific examination of turn signal stalk dust.

Turn signals are renowned for their durability. They have been observed operating continuously for long periods of time and over great distances.

What’s New This Month
Happy New Year!  We all have made it to 2012…way to go!  I’m predicting this to be an excellent year for everyone and hope it comes true for you.

I was extremely fortunate to get a two-day weekend for Christmas AND New Year’s. That was great and hope to enjoy the next time it happens in 6-7 years :)

My 5-year-old, Emily, has lost her first tooth so we had the letter to the tooth fairy, etc., recently.  She is learning to read now and I’m very proud of her.  Her older sister is quite a reader so she feels a lot of pressure to keep up with sis.  I told her if she keeps it up in 4 years she’ll be an even better reader.  They both have their own rooms now and seem to be adjusting well.

My new year’s resolution is to trim down some and get healthier.  Just won a trip from Toyota to a warm place and don’t want to be the pasty dough boy on the beach. Looking forward to a fair weather January with my fingers crossed…wish me luck!

Thanks again for your past business and I hope all is well with you and your family. Please look me up if you happen to be in the area. It would be great to see you!

Ask Becky/Ask Hampe: What’s new about the 2012 Toyota Camry?

You’ve seen Ask Becky in Des Moines Woman magazine, featuring Toyota of Des Moines sales consultant Becky Grissom; and we’ve put Ask Becky on Facebook, along with sales consultant Scott Hampe. Now, we’re bringing Ask Becky/Ask Hampe to the Toyota of Des Moines blog! Please post your questions at www.facebook.com/toyotadm and Becky and Scott will be happy to answer them!

Q: I keep hearing that the 2012 Toyota Camry has been ‘reinvented,’ but what are the biggest changes I’m going to see?

Becky: One of the first things you’re going to notice is the lines of the car. Toyota took pride in the optimized aerodynamics of this new model year, because it affects the car’s MPG, which clocks in at an EPA-estimated 25 city/35 hwy. (And the 2012 Camry Hybrid LE is 43 city/39 hwy!) You also get a ton of safety features, including 10 airbags, Smart Stop Technology and more. Safe, practical and still stylish!

Scott: Once you hop in the car, you’re going to notice the Entune System, turning your dashboard into a social and technological console. With Entune, you can get music thanks to Pandora and iHeartRadio, search through Bing, and loads of other apps plus the capability to connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth. This thing is cool inside and out!

(Got a question for Ask Becky/Ask Hampe? Post it at www.facebook.com/toyotadm!)

Steve Caspar wonders what social media would have looked like 2,000 years ago

Considering the biblical story of the birth of Christ, I have imagined a scenario where the main characters had used today’s communication technology and social media:

Being a man of few words, Mary’s husband Joseph had a bare bones voice, text and data plan from their cell carrier [Middle East Cellular]. Unfortunately, as an inexperienced internet user, Joseph inaccurately entered his Google search data and made reservations for the Stable Motel located in Bethlehem, PENNSYLVANIA! On top of that, they got lost on the way because Joseph’s phone navigation lost its signal when they traveled by the Dead Sea.

Mary, of course, was a heavy Facebook and Twitter user. How do you think the the Roman authorities and Three Wise Men heard about it all?

As we know, it all worked out famously in the end. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays.

Speaking of social media, learn more about Shareathon, happening during Toyotathon, by visiting www.toyota.com/shareathon, and follow us on Twitter (@toyotadm).

What’s New This Month
What a fantastic November! The weather was great and so was business. We split up the girls’ bunk beds and they, now, have their own separate rooms. Mom is sad they are growing up so fast but the girls are SUPER excited to have their own space.

I have learned this year that my house is supposed to have a Christmas tree in every room. I disagree and only had one per year when I grew up but what do I know?!? ;)

Rachel really loves Christmas time but sometimes I think she needs a glitter and garlan intervention (hehe).

Thank you again for your business and I hope you have a great Holiday season! Please look me up if you happen to be in the area (it would be great to see you!).
